positivity is the secret to happiness

Thoughts are things. You may be thinking, “really? I thought they were electrical impulses set off in the brain.” Well, that is how they are formed/brought about, but thoughts are more than just impulses. They also have a much greater effect on the world around you than you might expect.

Have you ever heard the phrase “like attracts like”? If you haven’t, have you ever had that kind of day where you wake up and your hair looks like crap? The thought seems to loom over you like a dark cloud, right? Then you’re late for class. Then your professor hands back a really bad test grade. Then maybe you get in a fender bender. Then you find out your mom has contracted some fatal disease, and then… okay, so that might be a little extreme, but the point is, that bad hair day turned right into like, the worst day ever. Why, you ask? Because like attracts like. Like thoughts and feelings attract more of that. How? The Universal Law of Attraction!

So you’re thinking “that sounds horrible! I don’t want any of that.” But if this can happen with negative thoughts, think about what you can do with positive ones. In his interview with The 700 Club Morris Goodman describes how he was a happy, healthy, successful MET Life agent who had just bought his own airplane. On March 10, 1981 he decided to take his new plane for a test flight. Yet, things didn’t go as planned and his landing gear got caught on power lines and the plane went down. Morris’ neck was broken in two places, his diaphragm and swallowing reflex were destroyed, and his voice box was crushed. His kidney, bowel, bladder, and liver no longer functioned, and all he could even move were his eyes. At this point you are ready to run in fear from the law of attraction, but you haven’t heard the amazing part.

Morris knew he couldn’t give up and vowed he’d walk out of the hospital by Christmas, which was only eight months away. Now, you might think that this goal is unattainable, and doctors would have agreed with you, yet Morris Goodman walked out of that hospital on the morning of December 25th, 1981. How did he do it? How did he make such a great comeback? Today Morris tours the country as an inspirational speaker so that he can share his story and his understanding of the Universal Law of Attraction.

I can imagine your reaction is something like “so this guy regenerates like Superman or something and I’m supposed to be able to do that? No way!” But you’re wrong! Anyone can use the Law of Attraction, no superpowers required. Here’s how it works:

If like attracts like, then positivity should bring about more of the same. Since thoughts are things, the universe has a way of manifesting them in the world around you. Whatever you send out into the universe with your mind will come back to you at some point in another form. So, on your bad hair day, you started off thinking about all the things that were going wrong, and what resulted? Like, the worst day ever! Perhaps if you had started off the day with an attitude of gratitude it might have gone more smoothly.

Yet, you can get even more out of the Law of Attraction than a good day. Take for example, a new car! Hold your horses there Aladdin, the Law of Attraction is no genie in a bottle. There is some work involved on your part. As I mentioned before, having an attitude of gratitude is always a great way to start. If you feel abundant, you will attract more into your life. ‘But, how do we get that car?’ Okay okay, so if there is something specific you are after, you can attract that as well. If you really want a good grade on a test, a date with the hot girl next door, or even a speedy departure of that pimple before your big date, you have to align yourself with it. The best way to do that is to feel like you already have it. That’s right! Visualize the A+ victory dance, your flawless skin in the mirror, or the butterflies in your stomach as you go in for the goodnight kiss. Don’t focus on how badly you want it, feel like you’ve already got it! With time, your feelings of having what you want will bring what you want right to you. The key is to be prepared to receive it.

You might be laughing, rolling your eyes, or even preparing to click away into the abyss of the internet. Yet, there is nothing else to say but, it really is that easy. Now, just because it doesn’t happen immediately doesn’t mean it isn’t working. Even ‘The Miracle Man’ Morris Goodman had to struggle through eight months in the hospital before he attained his goal.

In the movie “The Secret,” John Assaraf tells about how he started using the Law of Attraction. In 1995, he began by making “vision boards” which were boards covered in pictures of things he wanted in his life. He would sit in his office and visualize having all these things. Five years later his son saw an old box sitting around after a recent move and asked about what was in it. When John opened the box to show his son he found his old vision boards. He pulled one out and began to cry. At that moment he realized that not only had he obtained all the things on that board, but that he was living in the house that was pictured on it. Not a house like it, but the exact same house. Tell me that’s not amazing! It took him five years and a lot of focus, but today he lives in his dream home, and one day you could too.

Just don’t fret over how all the things you want will be manifested, just trust that it will happen. Its sort of like driving at night. You can only see what your headlights show you, but you know there is more road ahead. That is how life is, and believing is all you can do.

Also, don’t try to monitor every single thought. Gary Evans, the author of the Good to Feel Good blog, estimates that we have as many as 60,000 thoughts per day. That’s about 2500 per hour and about 42 per minute! Simply use your feelings to blanket your thoughts in positivity and you will have the world at your fingertips.

In conclusion, I’d like to leave you with a quote from William James’ book Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy, “These, then, are my last words to you: Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will create the fact.”

Try it for yourself!

a sewtastic adventure

i decided a month or so ago that i'd like to start making clothes.
everyone i know was very supportive of this strange and slightly uncharacteristic endeavor of mine.
my parents were especially supportive, as always.
i went home to visit them and was given a brand new Brother sewing machine and a box of all the essential sewing accessories i'd ever need.
THANKS MOM!

i started from there and am now the proud owner of two handmade garments - one skirt and one open-back top.
sure, the stitches are crooked, the skirt's pocket is an absolute disaster and i accidentally cut a slit in the front and center of the shirt...
i still DID IT.

my father says i have sewing in my blood...
i don't know about that, but i do know that i LOVE it.
it is so rewarding to create.
i used to write a lot, but i burned myself out on it too quickly.
since then it has been hard to express my creative energies.
sewing is the perfect outlet for this desire and i am so blessed to have the opportunity to do it.

you can see my work at this link:

i will be going to the fabric store this weekend, so check back for new garments in the near future!

what have you always wanted to do? why not try it!
check out www.soyouwanna.com for lots of ideas...

as always, i'd love to hear your feedback!

a little faith goes a long way.

while i wasn't always so sure there was a God, there is no questioning left to be done.
i've seen His presence in my life.

i have always been extremely blessed, but never gave credit where it was due.
it always seemed as though there was something more and the searching seemed to be never ending. just when i had accepted that i might never know, it was shown to me.
the series of events in my life has always led me to a better place, and it isn't because i am special.

"thoughts are things" - my father

i've managed to keep stay on the right track over the years, but not by my own doing.
if there was no God, i'd be dead or worse by now.
instead, i am with the man i've wanted for years, living in a fantastic apartment with a perfect roommate and an adorable dog. i am blessed with friends and family that care a lot about me and a healthy body that only needs enjoyable upkeep. i will be attending Widener University Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology to work towards my Doctor of Psychology degree - most surely God's work.

i'm not that smart!
my test scores and GPA aren't that high.
my essays were mediocre - i only spent a few hours on them.
my application arrived only a day before the deadline.
i'm not a blooming idiot, but i didn't expect to get into a selective graduate program!
consider that i only applied to ONE graduate program and was chosen out of 300 people to be part of a 32 person class.
THANK GOD!

i am feeling a range of emotions about going to school in the fall, but i am sure - more now than ever - that i will do well. i have faith that what is meant to happen will take place.

"God works in strange ways" - my mother

please, share your thoughts and experiences...
